Curator: Jan Boelen
Akbank Sanat is one of the 6 venues hosting the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial that will be held from 22 September to 4 November 2018.
The 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) under the title of A School of Schools, examines design as learning and learning as design. The biennial, which will run from 22 September to 4 November, will take on a multi-platform structure that employs, tests, and revises various strategies of education while reflecting on the role that design, knowledge and global connectedness play in present-day Istanbul and beyond. A School of Schools will be bringing together practitioners, educators and thinkers from Turkey and abroad over a time span of six weeks and exhibitions spread across six impressive venues, in an endeavor to create a common space for dialogue and production. The biennial curated by Jan Boelen will be presenting new knowledge alongside old, amateur spirit alongside academical pursuits, and professionalism alongside personal experience.
The 4th Istanbul Design Biennial will be held at six venues in Beyoğlu. Each venue will focus on one of the six schools under the title of A School of Schools: Unmaking School (Bozum Okulu) that will be presented at Akbank Sanat, Currents School (Akışlar Okulu) at Yapı Kredi Culture Centre, Scales School (Ölçekler Okulu) at Pera Museum, Earth School (Dünya Okulu) at Arter, Time School (Zaman Okulu) at SALT Galata, and Digestion School (Sindirim Okulu) at Studio-X Istanbul.
Unmaking School (Bozum Okulu), which will be on view at Akbank Sanat, examines how the irrepressible human instinct for creativity shapes the balances of the world from production to business and urbanization. The projects and activities at Unmaking School (Bozum Okulu) examine the old and new techniques of mapping as well as enquiring into site-specific modes of production.
