Limited Times

In the series Dar Zamanlar (Limited Times) that belongs to Adalet AĞAOĞLU which is the source of the inspiration of this exhibit, the matters like; political crisis, unjustness, social pressure and sexist manners are discussed with quotes by the book’s main character or other person’s moments. Character’s growth period and his journey that begins in a small town, than a big city, lastly in France in a Turkey that started to take steps thorugh rationalisating way.

In this four book series there are three works that inspires this exhibit. Those are “Ölmeye Yatmak” (Lie Down to Death), “Bir Düğün Gecesi” (A Wedding Night) and “Hayır” (No). In these books it is possible to feel the political crisis’ effects. With this influence, social pressure that imposed by community is negated by independent internal monologues, stream of consciousness’, clash between internal-external anachrony understanding and lastly works dialects. Limited times involve one’s stress, desperation, be estranged and feel othered to themselves or outside of them.

“Other” means person, people and everything besides “me”. Every me is other for someone other than me. By force of societies nature, “me” and “other” are unbrokenly communicated. “Other”, can occur when there are influences like; rules imposed by society, pressures, sexism, injustice, sexual orientation, migration, modern life’s burdens or identity crisis exist.

Period that person’s internal conflict and resistence that comes with it or transformation, personal experiences, their reactions being the “other” and emotional feedbacks they give are the node of the exhibition.

Artists’ work of arts can be easily affected by the acceptence that thought to be silent or being in denial of acceptence loudly and simply, patterns in their lives. Thus, Dar Zamanlar brings the impact of topics that mentioned earlier to the audience itself with three books. The purpose of the series is making sure the audience gets the feeling and idea as clear and emphatic as possible. The reasons are being “other” or othered were given to the audicence. Other artists’ works in the exhibit mainly purposes to give hope about othered concept to it’s dear guests.

“Is someone’s effort of understanding their inner world and give it to a meaning while taking this estranging path, being othered, depression or stress they take, a consequence of being slowly othered? Or a sincere reflection between freedom and correlation? Answering these questions by ourselves and start to question experiences and transformations we had, is the major purpose.

Relationship between society and individualism are mostly considered opposite but at the same time they complete and feed each other by being united.  Humankind turned their will to be free, into a one-man show by making things for themselves even more altered and depressive day by day while searching for the freedom they fully aware of.

“Only shattered time pieces can be put together, stacked and every piece can be placed various distances each other. If life is about to change, it will change with the ones that can change themselves, not the ones that keep pace with it.” (Ağaoğlu, Hayır 2004)

*Exhibition will be hold in two main titles.
