"Cinema and Sustainability" Screening and Conversation Program
Film Screening: "Once Upon a Time in The Future: 2121"
Turkey, 2022, Turkish with English Subtitles, 92 minutes
Director: Serpil Altın
In the late 21st century, the climate crisis and famine have made Earth uninhabitable. As the few survivors struggle to survive in underground colonies, the "Famine Laws" imposed by the Young Authority enforce a brutal regime: the price of a new life is the destruction of the older generation. The life of a family—comprising a woman, a man, a child, and a grandmother—living in their underground home is forever changed by the arrival of a newborn. "Once Upon a Time in The Future: 2121", one of the first eco-dystopian films in our cinema, poses the question, "What kind of future awaits us?" with a gripping narrative that powerfully highlights the breaking point between humanity, family, and nature.
Following the screening, director Serpil Altın will engage in a conversation moderated by Merve Selamet, Communication Coordinator of the Yuvam Dünya Association.
