What Does This Have to Do with Dionysus?
Facilitator: Oğuz Arıcı
Time: 15:00 – 18:00
Can we rethink the form, structure, rhythm, and components of dramatic texts through the lens of ritual theory? It is widely accepted that rituals are one of the origins of theater; however, rituals are not limited to religious content. Every aspect of culture is filled with countless rituals designed to organize and control life, many of which we are not even aware of.
In this workshop, the historical and cultural ritual roots of playwriting will be explored. Participants will examine how theater evolved from religious and social ceremonies into a dramatic form, discovering the impact of ceremonial patterns on theater. They will learn how dramatic structures and character creation are shaped by ritualistic designs and patterns. Additionally, through writing exercises, participants will explore how these ritual influences can still be traced in contemporary playwriting practices and how to integrate both major and minor ritualistic patterns from everyday life into theatrical writing.
