A tuba-saxophone duo is not a common match in music, yet, it’s not exactly the case for the old followers of Akbank Jazz Festival. Because this is not the first Istanbul visit of Daniel Herskedal & Marius Neset duo, these two musicians who have been playing together since their student years in Kopenhag Rhythmic Music Conservatory. They had visited the 23rd Akbank Jazz Festival, soon after releasing their album Neck of the Woods, a project blending Norwegian folk tunes and European church music. The Norwegian tuba player and composer Daniel Herskedal is an artist who pushes the limits of his instrument both technically and sonically. He reached international fame with his 2015 album, Slow Eastbound Train; toured throughout Europe and Japan. While the sax player Marius Neset, a pedigree of Michael Brecker and Chris Potter, inspired by Jan Garbarek, won the Germany Grammy, the Echo Jazz Award, with his 2016 album Snowmelt, which he recorded with London Sinfonietta. And both as an intrumentalist and composer he was listed among the 25 young musicians destined to shape the future of Jazz. If you’re curious about the progress their music has gone through, don’t miss this concert.
