Emotional Game Design: Emotional Journeys with Meaningful Choices
Time: 15:00-19:00
How do games evoke emotions? In games, players make their own choices and experience the consequences. Game designers utilize this simple structure to create emotional changes. By compelling the player to make meaningful choices, they can lead them on the emotional journey they intend.
This workshop will explore how games can elicit emotions through meaningful choices. We will not only discuss the theories behind it but will also put them into practice. We will specifically focus on game concepts such as rules, choices, consequences, objectives, and flow, which have the potential to evoke emotions that aren't possible in other mediums. We will demonstrate emotional game elements through various games and then move on to collective game design exercises on paper. Through this hands-on approach, we will explore how we can elicit emotions by directing players to make meaningful choices in game design.
