“The Canon and Representation in Contemporary Art”
Dr. Osman Erden (MSGSÜ, Department of Art History)
The word canon, which means ‘rule’ in Ancient Greek, is known to have entered the terminology of art history in the 20th century. The formation of the canon and the oppositions against the canon could be considered to be among the most important issues that play a principal role in the establishment of the history of Western art. However, the concept of the canon has been in circulation in Turkey only very recently. This seminar will be focusing on the emergence of the concept of the canon in Turkey, its place in contemporary art, and the issue of representation in contemporary art.
