From Classic to Jazz
Moderated by radio producer and jazz writer Hülya Tunçağ, who has greatly contributed jazz music in Turkey by cultivating knowledge and deep appreciation, this panel will provide a comprehensive exploration of the intersecting journey of classical music and jazz. With the participation of Sedef Erçetin Atala, a cellist performing internationally, and Prof. Dr. Alper Maral, a composer and musicologist involved in numerous publications on music, identity, and policy relations, ‘From Classic to Jazz’ panel will take place at Arter on October 6. Tunçağ describes this panel with the following words: “The relationship between classical music and jazz dates back to the 1930s. Although classical music and jazz are distinct in terms of composition and interpretation, some jazz musicians with exceptional training or virtuosity have been eager to play classical music and achieved success. Benny Goodman, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, and Brad Mehldau are just a few names that immediately come to mind. Likewise, some composers and instrumentalists, such as André Previn, Katia Labèque, Nigel Kennedy, and Emmanuel Pahud, who later recognized the artistic value of jazz have also explored this improvisational genre. In our conversation at this panel, we will examine jazz from their perspectives and discuss the current relationship between classical and jazz, including its ups and downs.”
