Ladies and New Standards invites us to a special performance, where female musicians and performers from the Turkish jazz scene will reinterpret the “new standards” from musicians like Carole King, Radiohead, Sting, Björk, Pink Floyd, and the Bee Gees. They will be performing at Zorlu PSM Turkcell Platinum Stage on 6 October. Hülya Tunçağ describes why this project was started: “Especially in the early years of American popular music spanning from 1915 to 1960, several talented musicians, many of whom fled Nazi Germany, wrote amazing and widely acclaimed songs. These songs were mostly Broadway musicals and Hollywood movie soundtracks. Iconic musicians like Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, and George & Ira Gershwin produced numerous catchy songs performed by great singers, including Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, and Rosemary Clooney. All these songs made history, and each became a ‘standard.’ Of course, jazz musicians could not resist such solid melodies either. The popular songs of each era cannot be erased from the audience’s memory. Some post-1960 pop and rock songs are still popular and have become standards. Why wouldn’t jazz musicians and performers reinterpret these ‘new standards’?”
