Modern and Contemporary Art: A Brief History 1
Speaker: Doç. Dr. Seda Yavuz
Time: 6:30-8:00 pm
The sociological changes in the 19th century, especially in continental Europe, and their reflection on art will be studied with examples from Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism. Movements and trends in the first half of the 20th century will be discussed together with the gaps they have created in the form-content axis. We will also look at the changes that occurred from the 19th to the 2nd half of the 20th Century with the "center of art" moving from Paris, to New York.
About Seda Yavuz
Seda Yavuz received her bachelor’s degree in Sculpture, from Marmara University,
Fine Arts Faculty in 1999. A year later, during her master’s study in ‘Art History’ at
Istanbul University, she worked in the Faculty of Literature, as a research associate. While her MA thesis subject was ‘Fluxus in the Context of Deconstruction’, her Ph.D. dissertation subject was ‘The Concept of Space in Sculpture: Modernism and Beyond’. Yavuz received her ‘Asst. Prof.’ title in 2013, and her ‘Assoc. Prof.’ Title in 2017. Yavuz teaches courses on Sources of Western Art, The History of Sculpture, Philosophy of Art and Contemporary Art Research (MA), The History of Sculpture Research (Ph.D.). Her research areas are; Western and Contemporary Art, Turkey in
the Republic Period and After, Modernism, Feminist Theories in Art, History of Sculpture. Yavuz has published many essays and critical writings in various magazines and newspapers. Worked on multiple exhibitions as curator. Held seminars in diverse art institutions and galleries. Yavuz is a member of the ‘International Association of Art Critics’ (AICA-TR).
