Free Jazz
Free jazz emerged as part of the African American people’s fight for freedom and justice, which has profoundly influenced American history. It has endured to this day by pushing and sometimes erasing the restrictive boundaries of jazz music. Just as African Americans proclaimed that freedom cannot be achieved solely through a name or identity, jazz musicians waged a sort of battle against limiting concepts like tempo, tone, and chord in pursuit of true and infinite freedom. In this panel discussion, featuring Atilla Aygin, one of the producers of the LaflıJazz program and a writer for LoftCaz Gazette, Lale Plak’s last owner and jazz radio programmer Hakan Atala, and musician, composer, and academic Şevket Akıncı as panelists, we will explore the history of free jazz, discuss its sociopolitical impact on American history, and listen to examples of legendary recordings. The discussion, which will take place on October 5 at Akbank Sanat, will be moderated by Hakan Rauf Tüfekçi.
