The second event of Science, Technology, Society Talks organized by IstanbuLab opens a conversation over the tradition of experimentalism and laboratories with Prof. Dr. Reşit Canbeyli’s story of building a laboratory in the Department of Psychology at Boğaziçi University.
A Laboratory underlines that scientific interest cannot be limited to a summary of what others have done, and science cannot be seen as a linear practice out of failures and emotions. This talk emphasizes the importance of laboratories to inspire young generations while activating an enthusiasm and passion for science.
Prof. Dr. Reşit Canbeyli completed his undergraduate education in the Department of Chemical Engineering and doctoral studies in the Department of Psychology at Columbia University. In 1976, he began working in the Department of Social Sciences at Boğaziçi University. He left the university in 1982 protesting the law on Higher Education, and continued his studies at Columbia University for a while. In 1994, he began working in the Department of Psychology at Boğaziçi University. Since 2011, he works as a retired professor in the same department.
Assoc. Prof. Maral Erol completed her BA degree at Boğaziçi University, and MA degree at Yıldız Technical University. After receiving her Ph.D. degree from the Science and Technology Studies Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, she continued her post-doc studies at Duke University for five years. Her research interests include gender, science and technology relations; masculinity studies; reproductive technologies; biomedical technologies and medicalization. She currently works as a faculty member in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Işık University.
