Tom Skinner
London based drummer, composer and producer Tom Skinner has been a vital and central figure in the burgeoning underground music scene in London throughout the last 20 years. A drummer for Sons of Kemet, known for revitalizing spiritual jazz traditions, Tom Skinner, has recently formed the band The Smile with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. While he has previously released recordings under the pseudonym Hello Skinny, Skinner’s first solo album under his original name, Voices of Bishara, was released in 2022. This album blends Skinner’s intricate rhythmic constructions with the rich textures of cello, saxophone, and bass, and was finalized through his cutting and editing of improvisational sessions in the studio. The collection draws inspiration from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and Skinner notes, “I was taking my cue from the great disco re-edits, people like Theo Parrish chopping up tunes and looping sections.” Recognized as one of the most innovative musicians in the contemporary music scene, Tom Skinner will perform at the 34th Akbank Jazz Festival on Sunday, October 13, at Borusan Music House, in collaboration with Borusan Sanat.
