"Cinema and Sustainability" Screening and Conversation Program
Film Screening: "Above Water"
Nigeria, France and Belgium, 2021, French with Turkish Subtitles, 89 minutes
Director: Aïssa Maïga
In northern Niger, the village of Tatiste faces the harsh realities of global warming, struggling to access water. Every day, 14-year-old Houlaye and other young villagers walk kilometers to fetch the water essential for their community’s survival, a task that keeps them from attending school. The water scarcity also compels adults to leave their families and cross borders annually in search of resources. Yet, beneath the region lie vast aquifer lake spanning thousands of square kilometers. A single borehole at the village center could transform life for everyone.
