"Interactivism: A Theory of Mind Based on Movement"
Guest: Haydar Oğuz Erdin
Moderator: Emre Şan
In this presentation, we aim to comprehend a movement-based representation theory. "Interactivism" is a systematic approach that follows a process ontology and avoids behaviourism by excluding representation from action. It also rejects symbol reductionism, which is currently dominant in computational theory of mind, despite being a purely computational theory. The approach accepts that anticipation is a natural emergence after the emergence of functions, and suggests that what we call representation is not correspondence but truth value. My intention is to elucidate some fundamental concepts of this exhaustive approach, which presents a somewhat peripheral proposal compared to conventional theories, within the scope of this presentation.
Haydar Oğuz Erdin left theoretical physics at PhD level (UT at Austin) to study Marxist theory and continental philosophy in philosophy (Bilgi University). Then, in order to get closer to science again, especially under the influence of the Homunculus Paradox, he did a PhD in cognitive philosophy of science (Boğaziçi University). After completing his postdoctoral studies with Mark Bickhard, the founder of Interactivism (Lehigh University), he returned to Turkey and will be teaching Interactivism as a part-time assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy at Boğaziçi University next academic year.
