Modern Dance History as a Labyrinth
Gizem Bilgen
The workshop ‘Modern Dance History as a Labyrinth’ that is to take place on February 8-9 -15-16 departs from how modern dance is defined within the broader context of performing arts and focuses on modern dance’s development through years with a cross-continental perspective. What were the conditions that triggered the emergence of modern dance, a type of dance that was born in America and became established in Europe; and what were the dynamics underlying it taking roots? Which social and artistic needs and necessities gave rise to the emergence of modern dance? How did modern dance influence other disciplines in performing arts and how did they influence it in return? What are the differences between genres such as dance theatre, physical theatre and musical theatre? In this workshop that will not just focus on a historical survey but also explore scientific and creative domains, examples from various periods will be screened.
‘Modern Dance History as a Labyrinth’ is open to all participants with an interest in the development of modern dance and it aims to evaluate together and make valuable various different perspectives.
