Seminar: History of Curating

In this seminar, the definition, function and evolution of the curator will be described in detail in a historical context. We will also look at some of the important curatorial projects realized by well-known curators within the framework of contemporary art practices. The speaker will also touch upon the processes of content determination and artist selection briefly.
Esra Aliçavuşoğlu
Esra Aliçavuşoğlu was born in Istanbul in 1973. She graduated from Art History department of Istanbul University Literature Faculty in 1996. In the same institution, she completed her postgraduate in 1999 and her doctorate in 2005 with the thesis titled "Ownness Representation within Creation of the Artist for the Turkish Art after 1980". She attended to courses of "Curatorial Studies" held at University of The Arts London Central Saint Martins in 2000. Between the years of 1996 - 2002; she worked as a culture-art reporter for Cumhuriyet, an editor for "Sanat Dünyamız (Our World of Art)" magazine released by Yapı Kredi Yayınları (Yapı Kredi Publishing) and Executive Editor for "Tarih Vakfı İstanbul (History Foundation of İstanbul)" magazine. Between the years 2006 - 2013, she wrote criticisms and articles of art for Cumhuriyet and a design culture magazine, Arredamento Architecture. She received the title of Associate Professor in the field of Western Arts and Modern Art in 2013. In 2016, she has made researches in New York on modern art museums, with the aid of Tubitak Scholarship. She became a professor in 2020. She is still working as a lecturer for Facult of Fine Arts at Marmara University where she gives lectures on art history. Articles of Aliçavuşoğlu, who is also a member of AICA International Association of Art Critics, have been published in many national and international academic publishings.
