"Popular Theater and Palace"
Speakers: Nilgün Firidinoğlu
Theatrical performances in the Ottoman palace in the 19th century were not limited to plays performed by foreign and local groups or artists in western style. This is the period when Tulûat and Ortaoyunu, which are important elements of entertainment culture in the imperial capital, Istanbul, were among the preferences of the Palace as well. Nilgün Firidinoğlu will examine the relationship between the audience and the actors in the popular theatre performances held in the presence of the Sultan (“huzur temsilleri”) in the Ottoman palace and discuss the effect of this relationship on the quality of the representation.
