TALKS ON HISTORY OF OUR THEATRE
AKBANK SANAT & THEATER FOUNDATION OF TURKEY (TTV)
"From the Tanzimat to the Republic, Theater and Memory"
Speaker: Beliz Güçbilmez
Moderator: Noyan Ayturan
Since the Tanzimat Period, the definition of "Western Style Turkish Theatre" has been also accepted as the definition of a dramatic model. Despite this acceptance, considering the "representation of time", which is the distinguishing element of the model, it is possible to see that the Turkish texts were never Western. While the "Western style" mostly establishes itself with a cause-effect relationship between the past and the present and carries the front-to-back arrangement of the linear perspective into its structure, it also makes remembering a function of the present. In our theatre, on the other hand, dramatic texts are set in a monolithic present without a past, without memory, and with these structures, they can be read as a miniature without perspective.
