TALKS ON HISTORY OF OUR THEATRE

AKBANK SANAT & THEATER FOUNDATION OF TURKEY (TTV)

"From the Tanzimat to the Republic, Theater and Memory"

Speaker: Beliz Güçbilmez

Moderator: Noyan Ayturan

Since the Tanzimat Period, the definition of "Western Style Turkish Theatre" has been also accepted as the definition of a dramatic model. Despite this acceptance, considering the "representation of time", which is the distinguishing element of the model, it is possible to see that the Turkish texts were never Western. While the "Western style" mostly establishes itself with a cause-effect relationship between the past and the present and carries the front-to-back arrangement of the linear perspective into its structure, it also makes remembering a function of the present. In our theatre, on the other hand, dramatic texts are set in a monolithic present without a past, without memory, and with these structures, they can be read as a miniature without perspective.

Beliz Güçbilmez: After graduating from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Ankara University, she continued her education in the field of theatre. She taught theatre theory and playwriting at universities for over twenty years. In addition to translating a theoretical book and a play from English, she also wrote two books on theatre: " İroni ve Dram Sanatı", "Zaman/Zemin/Zuhûr: Gerçekçi Türk Tiyatrosunda Minyatür Kurgusu".

Beliz Güçbilmez, who also writes and directs plays and works as a dramaturg in projects, has been carrying out four-stage literacy studies in the workshop she founded in her name for five years and continues to explain and write the "Magnetic Field Method", which she founded on metaphor theory.

Noyan Ayturan: After completing his undergraduate education in Physics, he received his master's degree from Istanbul University, Department of Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy. He studied acting and mime at Istanbul University State Conservatory Pantomime Major of Art, Theater de l'Ange Fou - London International School of Physical Mime and Studio Actors, and is pursuing his doctorate in dramaturgy. He gave lectures in the performing arts departments of Istanbul, Haliç, Yeditepe, Yeni Yüzyıl and Beykent Universities. In addition to directing theatre plays, he produces academic content on theatre at an online video platform called Hausbühne.
