"Curating Contemporary Art" Seminar Program

Seminar: A Tool for Reflecting on Society: Emotions

Speaker: Ferhat Kentel

Time: 6:00-7:30 pm

Sociology, which both understands and forms the language of modern society, which has evolved with industrialisation, nation-state, rational thought (and science), is today much more critical of the society from which it emerged. It questions the modern society that places man as a “God” over nature, powerful people over other people, and destroys the environment, nature and memories in the name of progress.

The sociology of modern society, which was first described and experienced in terms of classes, has gradually descended into more micro areas and the complexity of everyday life. The modernist paradigm and power, which specialised disciplines, divided society into functions (politics, religion, art, etc.), divided time and structures into "modern and traditional", "public and private", "secular and religious", and divided people's state of existence into "mind and body", “reason and emotion” were thus faced with a deep questioning. Today, we are going even deeper. From the perspective of "sociology of emotions", we feel how unique "modern" people are and how similar they are to each other. From the encounters and vibrations of people and disciplines, we discover ways of looking at the world anew and our responsibilities.
