Interview: Busen Dostgül
Akbank Sanat “Guitar Days” was hosted Hungarian guitarist / musician Zsófia Boros for one of her brilliant performances filled with captivating melodies. Before her concert on 24th January, we caught the chance to do a short interview with Boros about music, guitar, collaborations and more.
What was your motivation for choosing guitar other than your local instruments such as tamburica, cimbalom, etc.?
I received a guitar for Christmas at the age of five. Since than we are inseparable.
You’ve been working with many talented musicians and instrumentalists through out your career and also on some records have preferred to be solo. What’s the core feeling that you’ve had when you’re working with others? Do you feel comfortable, as you’re playing alone?
I always feel privileged to work with other musicians and I feel also lucky to find so good musicians. On the other hand I also enjoy and love to have an art of self reflection without compromise to define the music on my own way.
When I listen to your songs, it makes me feel like you’ve never had limits in your mind during the song writing process. Did you ever have moments that made you limit yourself in your creation process?
It is a honor for me that You feel that I am playing my own compositions and it is also my Intension while choosing the repertory to find my own "voice", but unfortunately I am only the interpreter.
You’ve worked with composers from Brazil, Cuba and Argentina. Especially guitar has a remarkable role in those countries’ local sounds. From your perspective, which style or sound is closer to you?
I don't really like to give boarders for music, not in instruments and not in countries. Everything is in connection, specially the written music is with a lot of influence. The music is transporting energy and I am following my heart dependent of the story I want to tell.
Do you imagine stories when you’re producing new melodies? Do you give space to improvisations on your live shows or do you like to stick to the original versions of the songs?
While practicing I often imagine stories, which helps also in concerts to visualize a special mood or energy, but as interpreter I try to follow the instructions/wishes of the composer. The freedom starts for me after I inhale the music, than I can exhale it.
You’ve released your recent album Local Objects two years ago. What are your plans about 2018?
For example to come to Istanbul in January... I try to live in here and now. Every day actually. There are some beautiful compositions written for me. 7 short pieces written by Wolfgang Muthspiel or a piece by Tõnu Kõrvits called "Farewell to Normandy". I hope I can manifest them with some other music into an album.
What should we expect from your upcoming Istanbul show?
Keep up your curiosity and enjoy !
