Seminar: Writing About Art: Does Art Journalism Differ From Other Forms of Journalism?
Speaker: Andrew Finkel
About the Seminar: The first principle of this workshop is that knowing how to structure an article that works to retain the attention of the reader is the key to writing about art (or football or the stock exchange or climate change). There are certain tricks and techniques which anyone sitting down to do a piece of art journalism or any sort of journalism should be aware. Writing well art may be an art in itself, but it is one that can be learned. Of course, there are special challenges in writing analytically about aesthetics. Introducing a critical voice into an article or getting the tone right are additional skills. And serious critics have to wrestle not just with their own inclinations, those of their readers but also the firm prejudices of the art market. This course will set those wanting to write about art on the right path and help those who already do write about art to improve their craft.
