In our present-day world, we witness images assuming an increasingly important role in our individual and social existence. However, providing answers to the questions of what the image is or how it functions seems to be not that easy. And in enquiring into what the image is, in examining its existence, the question concerning the existence of the image appears to be an obstacle to our thought. All images, whether mental or material, static or moving, in our private archives or on large public screens, have this unique power to convey a particular message and to stimulate an emotion. However, this potential does not always present itself in an obvious manner. The image is an ambiguous phenomenon; it is both alienating and liberating. And this ambiguity brings with it a kind of uncertainty. With an image, we never feel quite at home as we do in language.
The event is free of charge. Invitations available from the Akbank Sanat ticket office on the event day, one hour before the event begins.
