Art cannot be dealt or discussed separately from social facts and events. So we can say, 1960s witnessed a second Renaissance of huge and tightly interlocking interaction. While the Vietnam War was its worst days, on the art side, a world of art, wrapping creativity around the paradigm of “beat” was afire. This was a fertile field of negotiation, including the writer William S. Burroughs, the poet Allen Ginsberg, novelist and poet Jack Kerouac, besides jazz musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, even including Jim Morrison and independent film-makers. In this panel talk, to be moderated by Sevin Okyay, with guest speakers Hülya Tunçağ and Ali Sönmez, the relationship between the Beat Generation authors and jazz musicians will be discussed in depth, also making cross-references to that time’s movies, for sure.
