Cinema and Jazz
Seda Binbaşgil
Radio host and music writer Seda Binbaşgil was taken by the beauty of jazz in New Orleans where she went for her undergraduate studies. After her return to Turkey, Seda produced and presented a radio program on jazz, called “Esintiler” on Açık Radyo, gave lectures on jazz at Boğaziçi University and wrote about jazz on various magazines including Jazz Dergisi and Andante. Giving lactures on cinema for the past two years, Binbaşgil, in this interview, will talk about a 1959 movie, “Shadows” by one of the pioneering directors of American independent cinema, John Cassavetes. Its soundtrack was recorded by the famous jazz musicians Charles Mingus and Shafi Hadi and the movie is regarded as an important reflection of improvised acting and mise en scene concept on cinema.
