It is possible to see names that shape jazz’s today or even it’s near future at the Akbank Jazz Festival’s programme this year. A new name from the ECM catalogue, Shinya Fukumori Trio, an upcoming name from new generation spiritual jazz, The Comet Is Coming, and a star from London’s new generation jazz scene, Nubya Garcia is some of these names...
EZRA COLLECTIVE
London has reminded everyone that it is one of the most important music centers of the world with its emerging dynamic and rich new wave jazz scene, and Ezra Collective is one of its most exciting bands. Blending afrobeat, reggae, hip hop and jazz sounds with high energy, the collective also received high praise with their legendary live performances. The London quintet follows the footsteps of the pioneering masters with steps of highly original sounds.
THE COMET IS COMING
Shabaka Hutchings, the pioneer of the new generation spiritual jazz trend, and Soccer96, a duo that follows the no limits principle in their music, created this project inspired by Sun Ra. Electonic layers, surprising rhythmical arrangements and one-of-a-kind sax solos, The Comet Is Coming proved themselves with their Mercury Prize winning debut album in 2016. We would definitely recommend you to check out not only The Comet Is Coming recordings before the concert, but also the other projects of the musicians who feed from numerous musical expressions and genres.
SHINYA FUKUMORI TRIO
Probably going to give one of the most romantic performance of the Akbank Jazz Festival, Shinya Fukuromi Trio’s first album from prestigious ECM label, For 2 Akis, gained huge success. The trio lead by head composer and drummer Shinya Fukumori’s wide musical vision, gains an eclectic jazz sound with pianist Walter Lang and tenor Matthieu Bordenave. The Sova-period compositions that Fukumori has been a fan of since his childhood takes up an important portion in the trio’s repertoire.
CALOÉ
French jazz vocalist and composer Caloé loses herself in a limitless freedom when she sings. Making improvisations, paying tribute to various cultures with details embedded in her music and exploring brand new areas, Caloé follows the footsteps of her idol Ella Fitzgerald and continues developing the “scat” vocal technique created by the legend in her own way. Using YouTube as the main platform to release her music, Caloé keeps surprising her audience with new videos she release every month. The Steve Wonder rendition she released in the beginning of this year will give you an idea about what to expect from her first upcoming performance in Istanbul, during the Akbank Jazz Festival.
NUBYA GARCIA
It wouldn’t be out of place to say that Nubya Garcia is the shining star of London’s new generation jazz scene. Young sax player and composer Garcia has worked with many inspiring names from Congo Natty to Moses Boyd before he started to build the foundation for his afrobeat sauced characteristic sound. His first solo record named Nubya’s 5ive that was released last year featured important names from London scene at several tracks. His passionate live performance below is a good opportunity to meet Nubya Garcia, whose name will only get bigger in the jazz scene for the foreseeable future.
